AAAA Pennsylvania State Championship Game (December 9, 2000)

Erie Cathedral Prep.....41
Central Bucks West......35

Congratulations to the 2000 PIAA Class 4A State Champion Erie Cathedral Prep. They won a hard fought battle against the CB West Bucks on Saturday, December 9 at Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey, PA. The overtime win ended the longest winning streak in Pennsylvania high school football history at 59 wins. Phil DiGiacomo rushed for 96 yards and tied the championship game record with five touchdowns for the night. Fran Golden had four receptions for 68 yards and had a stellar night on defense. This game was the first PIAA Class AAAA State Championship game to go into overtime and perhaps the most exciting high school football games ever played.

AAAA Eastern Pennsylvania Championship Game (December 2, 2000)

Central Bucks West......27
Bethlehem Catholic......12

December 9, 2000 is the last possible day of football for any high school team fortunate enough to arrive at the state title game. For the fourth straight year, Central Bucks West is one of those fortunate teams. To call the Bucks from Doylestown fortunate would be a huge understatement. To call the Bucks a finely tuned, oiled machine would be more appropriate.

There was the retirement of legendary coach Mike Pettine. The off-field problems that plagued West before they even kicked of their season. The lack of experience on the varsity level with a mere handful of starters returning. All these factors could not slow this locomotive of a team, which is now full steam ahead for its last station stop of the season: the state championship game in Hershey. To get to Hershey, West had to go through Beccahi. A great football team, Beccahi featured an all-state running back in Eddie Scipio and also an all-state receiver in John Dieser. In quarterback Mark Borda they had a record setting passer. These weapons could not ante up the hand dealt by West: a bona fide quarterback in Mike Orihel, running backs James West and Bob Warden, all purpose back David Camburn, linebacker Gavin Potter, and the pride and soul of the 2000 Bucks: Phil DiGiacomo. Defensive linemen Angelo Verrillo and Gene Rich made life difficult for Borda all day long. The defensive secondary led by halfbacks Zach Ingram and Fran Golden virtually left Beccahi’s receiving corps null and void. This total team effort proved to be vital in West’s 27 – 12 domination of the Hawks. Good luck to you gentlemen in your upcoming battle with Erie Cathedral Prep in what will be the last game in an already sensational season.

AAAA Eastern Pennsylvania Championship Game (December 2, 2000)

The smell of chocolate was in the air by halftime. Chocolate kisses were being tossed into the crowd and onto the field at the end of the game as the scoreboard read 27-12. The Central Bucks West Bucks struck down the Golden Hawks of Bethlehem Catholic in the PIAA Class AAAA Eastern Pennsylvania playoff final. Mark Borda, Becahi QB, came into the game with 2,787 yards rushing but was only able to complete 106 yards on Saturday. Running back Eddie Scipio broke for 2 long runs, the second a 36-yard TD run around the right end to give Becahi a 6-0 lead. The Bucks then began to turn up the heat offensively and defensively. On the next two possessions the Bucks scored. Mike Orihel found Phil DiGiacomo on a short touchdown pass. Jim Wiberly provided the extra point. Angelo Verrillo, Gene Rich, Gavin Potter and the rest of the Bucks defense pressured Borda to throw 2 incomplete passes and forced the punt. A 30-yard punt return by Phil DiGiacomo set up a 13-yard touchdown run by James West. The score was 14-6 early in the second quarter. The defense continued to pressure Borda all day and even Scipio’s runs could not spark the Hawk’s offense to get them back into the game. Dave Camburn went in for a four-yard touchdown run making it 20-6 at the end of the first half.

In the second half touchdowns were traded. John Dieser had a 18-yard pass reception but the extra point was blocked by Zach Ingram. James West ran for a second TD and Wiberly’s kick was good. Angelo Verrillo and Gene Rich accounted for 3 sacks, 2 fumbles, and a fumble recovery.

The Bucks will face Erie Cathedral Prep for the PA State title next week in Hershey. Game time is 5 PM. You don’t want to miss this rematch!

AAAA District I Championship Game (November 24, 2000)

Central Bucks West......39
Downingtown.............14

"Dazed and Confused in Doylestown" was the name of the show playing in Doylestown Friday night. Not at the County Theater but at War Memorial Field when the Central Bucks West Bucks whipped the Whippets of Downingtown 39-14. The win give the Bucks their fourth straight PIAA Class AAAA District title and their 58th straight win!

The Bucks knew exactly what they must do to stop the Whippets. They needed to contain running back Mike Recchiuti who came into the contest with 2,129 rushing yards. Recchiuti had 32 carries for 137 yards for the night. Good by most standards but not good enough when you compare that to the Bucks "offense by committee" of Bob Warden (11 for 73 yards, 2 TDs), Phil DiGiacomo (9 for 43 yards), and James West (4 for 88 yards, 1 TD). Quarterback Mike Orihel had one of the best games of his three-year starting career throwing 8-for-15 for 141 yards and completing passes to no less than five different receivers. Zach Ingram caught a 25-yard pass from Orihel on the first offensive play of the game and later added a 29-yard touchdown reception. On that first West possession, Orihel completed three out of four passes for 63 yards including two to senior Fran Golden. That set the Whippets into a tailspin. On West’s second possession, Orihel hooked up with tight end Angelo Verrillo for another 21 yards. Just when Downingtown was convinced that the Bucks would pass the ball, Orihel handed off to his running backs. With a defense waiting for Orihel’s arm to fire on a third and long, CB West crossed it up with a draw play to James West for a 64-yard touchdown run. All night long the Bucks’ defensive line had to manage a much larger Downingtown offensive line. The Whippets’ average player on the line was 250 lbs. Pressure from Gavin Potter, Gene Rich, and Jim Fagnani forced quarterback Chris Warrick to throw two costly interceptions.

One key CB West player missed the mayhem at War Memorial Field. Senior Dave Camburn, having just been released from the hospital, told his fellow teammates by phone that he had no intentions of ending his high school football career listening to it on the radio. Next week, the Bucks will have the opportunity to face Bethlehem Catholic in the Eastern Final of the State Championship.

AAAA 2nd Round Playoff Game (November 17, 2000)

Central Bucks West....35
Pennridge.............21

The Bucks won their second round playoff game against a solid Pennridge team Friday night 35 – 21. After a flat performance the week before, CB West came out on fire, taking the opening kickoff with poor field position because of a penalty and driving 94 yards down the field. Phil DiGiacomo capped the drive with a 4-yard plunge into the end zone. DiGiacomo would carry the ball 32 times for 205 yards and 4 touchdowns on the night. That would be the only score of the first half with West going into the locker room holding a one-touchdown lead. Pennridge responded after the half when Jason Rhodes took a double reverse 57 yards to tie the game. West promptly took the ball and drove down the field with DiGiacomo scoring from 2 yards out. Gavin Potter and his defensive unit would set up the most exciting play of the night by forcing Pennridge to punt the ball away. Dave Camburn fielded the ball 75 yards away from pay dirt, faked a reverse to DiGiacomo, sprinted down the opposing sideline. Jon Kochan would put the Rams back in business with a 61 yard run which would have been a touchdown had it not been for Fran Golden showing impressive speed chasing him down and tripping Kochan up at the 5 yard line. Rhodes would take it in however and make it a ballgame at 21 – 14. On the ensuing West drive, DiGiacomo again stepped it up as only he can by showing a little of everything (speed, power, and balance) on his best run all night, taking it 25 yards for his third trip to Yatzi land. Pennridge and West would exchange touchdowns again, and the Bucks held on to keep their run at a fourth straight state championship alive. Bob Warden was very impressive rushing 13 times for 79 yards, including a key fourth down run where he gained the first down on a tough second effort after seemingly being stuffed in the backfield. Zach Ingram was West’s leading receiver, catching 2 balls for 44 yards. The Bucks will now play host to Downington for the district title.

Notes: Jim Wiberly had a good night punting the ball, trapping the Rams deep in their own territory whenever he was called on… Jeff Johnson had a great night on special teams, registering two tackles against a very dangerous kick returning team… After a dismal performance the week before, West’s sidelines was very emotional and were indeed the "12th Man" in the Bucks victory… former head coach and legend Mike Pettine gave a very emotional speech before the Bucks took the field and was intricate in West’s explosive first half.

AAAA 1st Round Playoff Game (November 10, 2000)

Central Bucks West....32
Upper Darby ...........8

It wasn’t the prettiest, but it was a win. CB West started
their quest for their fourth straight Class AAAA state
championship by beating Upper Darby 32-8 at War Memorial
Field. With this victory the Bucks tied yet another state
record of 56 straight wins. General Braddock High School
west 55-0-1 from 1953-1960. The Bucks offense had difficulty
establishing its running game so Mike Orihel took to the air
finding James West, Zach Ingram, and Adam Scholl in the end
zone. Orihel hooked up with five different West receivers
completing 10 of 18 passes for 178 yards. The CBW defense
dominated the Royal’s offense by holding them to just 76 yards
in the first half. The Bucks defense held the dangerous wide
receiver Cory Cook to only one reception for the night.
Josh Sands, Nick Daily, Angelo Verrillo and Chris Matje on
the O-line had to fend off a large and powerful Royals defense,
but they made it possible for Orihel to get his passes off.
CB West will host the winner of the CB East - Pennridge
contest on Friday, November 17 at War Memorial Stadium.

Game 10 (November 3, 2000)

Central Bucks West....13
North Penn ........... 7

It wasn’t the Father vs. Son match-up this year. There was
no pre-game hype this year but North Penn fiercely pushed
the Bucks into the final minutes of the fourth quarter tied
7-7. With 4:05 remaining in the fourth quarter, Phil DiGiacomo
took a pitch from quarterback Mike Orihel, faded back, and
then found Gavin Potter wide open in the end zone. The 6-yard
halfback pass on third and goal stunned the upset-minded
NP Knights and gave CB West the lead 13-7. The Knights had
stopped the Bucks on three earlier attempts inside the 5-yard
line. The Bucks were forced to grind it out in the second half
eventually wearing down the persistent Knight defense.
Phil DiGiacomo rushed for 207 yards and James West had 12
carries and 90 yards. North Penn was unable to capitalize on
CB West’s miscues. The Bucks forced NP to punt or give up the
ball on each of their second half possessions. NP had only
51 yards rushing compared to the Bucks 280 yards rushing.
The Bucks gained a total of 326 yards to the Knight’s
171 yards. The three-time defending state champion Bucks
advance to the District I playoffs and will play at War
Memorial Field next weekend.

Central Bucks West....37
Pennsbury..............0

As the final seconds of the clock ran down in CB West’s hard
fought battle over Pennsbury, Angelo Verrillo and Adam Scholl
doused Head Coach Mike Carey with the traditional bucket of
ice water. The team had reason to celebrate having just eclipsed
their own current winning streak record with their 54th straight
win. The score was not indicative of the hard fought battle.
The Pennsbury team was big and physical. The Falcons forced CB
to punt on their first possession but Jim Wiberly’s 32-yard punt
was fumbled and recovered by Zach Ingram on the 34-yard line.
Three plays later, tailback James West took an inside handoff
24 yards for a touchdown. The
Falcons’ defense was tough and did
not allow the explosive Bucks offense to find a groove so the
Bucks used a group of backs to grind out yardage. Phil DiGiacomo
had 14 carries for 64 yards, Dave Camburn had 6 carries for
24 yards, Bob Warden had 7 carries for 34 yards, and James West
had 5 carries for 51 yards. Clay Lepley and Aaron Kennedy
also moved the ball well for the Bucks in the second half.
The O-line of Nick Daily, Gene Rich and Jon Arsenault provided
the openings. Quarterback Mike Orihel was 6 for 12 in pass
completions. The Bucks defense stepped it up and held Pennsbury
to just 17 yards in the first half and one first down. The
Falcons finished with just 82 total yards compared to 315 yards
for the Bucks. Next stop, Suburban I league title against
North Penn.

Game 8 (October 20, 2000)

Central Bucks West....49
Harry S. Truman........0

The Bucks of Central Bucks West took care of business
Friday night and came one step closer to rewriting the
record book with an impressive 49-0 trouncing of the
Tigers.  West (the player, not the team) got things
started with a nifty three-yard run over the left guard,
Gene Rich.  With a little more than three minutes left in
the opening quarter, Phil DiGiacomo found Bob Warden
in the end zone for the Bucks second strike.  Jim Wiberly,
contributing terrifically on special teams alongside
the likes of Gavin Potter, Fran Golden, and Jeff Johnson,
recovered the ensuing fumbled kickoff, and CB West
capitalized on the turnover when Zach Ingram took it
to the house from 19 yards away.  Dave "Mr. Excitement"
Camburn, as dubbed by the jolly TV commentator Bob Freedman
on Channel 66, ran the ball 52 yards for another strike,
and Bob Warden would score his second TD of the game
with a five yard jaunt.  The mercy rule was in effect
at halftime, but Jimmy Jam-Jam West showed little mercy
with his second trip to the only place men aren't afraid
to dance (the end zone).  West, first name of James,
led all rushers with 85 yards.  The victory ties the
state record currently held by themselves at 53
consecutive wins.

Game 7 (October 14, 2000)

Central Bucks West...28
Central Bucks East....7

Billed as the Civil War of Doylestown, the Bucks faced
their toughest opponent this season and fought to win
the battle 28-7.  The Patriots cut the Bucks lead to
14-7 early in the fourth quarter but CB West responded
with their typical offense - smash mouth football.  Junior
tailback, James West, provided the excitement this week
with 136 yards in 12 carries and two TDs.  Quarterback
Phil DiGiacomo carried the ball 13 times for 97 yards
and two touchdowns behind a strong West offensive line
including Nick Daily, Gene Rich, and Jon Arsenault.
Zach Ingram ran in a two-point conversion that left the
Bucks on top at halftime 14-0.  West ran for a total
of 338 yards while East rushed for only 138 yards for
the evening.  With this win, West extends its winning
streak to 52 consecutive games.  The current record of
53 consecutive wins was set by the Bucks from 1984-1988.

Game 6 (October 6, 2000)

Central Bucks West.....55
Council Rock............7

With senior Phil DiGiacomo as quarterback, the Bucks rallied
to an impressive 55-7 win over visiting Council Rock.
The Bucks had their moment of concern when the snap was
fumbled on the opening drive of the game
The Indians
converted this mishap into 7 points and put the Bucks
behind 7-0 for the first time this year.  Soon the Indians
were again inside West territory when Phil DiGiacomo
intercepted a Ryan Wambold pass and raced 54 yards for a
touchdown.  Wambold, who had thrown for 1,002 yards coming
into the game, threw three interceptions in the first

quarter.  On their next possession, Wambold dropped back to
pass and misread his intended receiver.  The pass was picked
off by Zach Ingram and returned 70 yards for another score.
After
Dave Camburn grabbed the Bucks third interception.
the Bucks offense took over.  Phil DiGiacomo ran a QB
keeper 46 yards into the end zone and connected with
Zach Ingram for a 34-yard  touchdown pass.  Patrick
Jarrett stepped in the fullback spot and was 8-33
yards rushing.  After Dave Camburn and Bob Warden each
had a rushing touchdown, the Bucks led at half time
42-7.  With the continuous clock running in the
second half, Jim Fagnani had a four-yard touchdown run and
James West went 90 yards for a touchdown.  The West defense
shut down Wambold, holding him to just two of 12 completions
for 58 yards. Rock's offense produced a total of 158 yards
while West netted 408 yards for the game.

GAME 5 (September 28, 2000)

Central Bucks West... 54
Neshaminy............ 28

The CB West football team showed off more of its offensive weapons while earning a 54-28 victory over Neshaminy Thursday night. The Bucks also extended their current winning streak that began four years ago to 50 games.  Senior quarterback Mike Orihel completed ten passes for 229 yards to seven different receivers, including Phil DiGiacomo, Bob Warden, Zach Ingram, Dave Camburn, Fran Golden, and Adam Scholl.  The Bucks explosive backfield was ignited by Bob Warden (five carries, 120 yards), Phil DiGiacomo (11 carries, 53 yards), and Dave Camburn (four carries, 59 yards).  Mike Orihel, James West, Doug Ortiz and Joe DiGiacomo added to the rushing yardage.  Andrew Bross added five extra points for the evening.  The Bucks special teams proved to be another weapon by taking advantage of the early miscues by Neshaminy in the two opening kick-offs.  The Redskins came back with a Jamar Brittingham drive that brought the first quarter score to 14-7.  CB West then put the Redskins away on their next three possessions, however.  DiGiacomo scored on a one-yard touchdown run, Orihel threw a 56 yard touchdown pass to Zach Ingram, and DiGiacomo scored on a 13-yard rush to make it 33-7 at halftime.  The second half saw CB West rest many of its starters late after Warden scored on a 64-yard touchdown run to make it 40-7 in the third quarter.  This year’s version of CB West football is proving to be one of the most balanced teams in many years, and one that is continuing to mystify their opponents.

GAME 4 (September 22, 2000)

Central Bucks West... 55
Wm. Tennent........... 7

The CB West game against Wm. Tennent was a contest for a while ... if you consider two plays a while.  A pitch to Dave Camburn that he took 73 yards for a touchdown and a beautiful 40-yard TD pass to Gavin Potter from Mike Orihel jetted the CB West Bucks to a 13-0 lead.  The Bucks put up their 49th straight win Friday night as the Panthers fell 55-7.The starters for CBW took the second half off after building the first half score to 41-0.  West held the Panthers without a passing yard until the final two minutes of the game.  The defense forced three interceptions, including one by senior linebacker, Adam Scholl, who returned it 35 yards for a TD.  Seven players scored touchdowns on offense.  In addition to Camburn's long run, Phil Digiacomo (8 carries for 64 yards), Bob Warden, Doug Kniese and Mark Magness all carried the pigskin into the end zone. Jeff Johnson caught a 14-yard pass from Orihel for a TD. The Bucks dominated the Panthers in total offense, 476 yards to 114.
