Central Bucks West.....13

Pennridge .............14

It was a big game … big. It was a big win for Pennridge (the first time Pennridge won since 1972) and a heartbreaking loss for CB West. For the first time since 1992 you will not find the Bucks in the District playoffs. If anyone left the game early to beat the traffic they missed the entire game.

The game started off with no score in the first quarter. Pennridge and West both punted the ball away on their first possessions. The Bucks scored just before half time on a sustained drive ending in a 3-yard rush by Clay Lepley. The third quarter was again scoreless. The Bucks missed on an opportunity to score when Gene Rich, at the fullback position, fumbled the ball in the end zone. The ball went out of bounds in the end zone although from the fans’ vantage point Rich appeared to be over the goal line. The officials ruled it as a fumble in the end zone. The ball was brought out to the 20-yard line, possession Rams. With the momentum and the wind with them, University of Maryland bound Sam Hollenbach showed Division I poise and delivered the ball to Jake Loux on a deep crossing pattern for 49 yards. Two plays later Hollenbach hit Jon Fox on a perfectly thrown ball to the left corner of the end zone for a TD. The score was now tied 7-7 halfway through the fourth quarter. West answered quickly. From the 20-yard line, Jim Fagnani burst up the middle for a 67-yard gain. Fagnani finished the 6-play drive when he took the ball in on a 2-yard run with 4:12 left in the game. But Jim Wiberly’s PAT into the wind was uncharacteristically wide right and ruled "no good."

The Rams, now armed with plenty of grit and determination, set off on a series of successful play action passes and a 68-yard drive. It ended with an 11-yard TD run by freshman Ryan Geiser. With 48 seconds left in the game, Pennridge scored and made their important PAT to go ahead of the Bucks 14-13. Pete Hamill returned the ball to the 45-yard line on the kickoff but the game ended when Joe DiGiacomo’s pass intended for Kyle Myers was intercepted. Although it appeared that Kyle was pushed just before going up for the ball, the Bucks did not get the pass interference call and the Pennridge Rams only needed to take a knee and run out the clock.

For the second time this season, the Bucks had to watch their game get away from them in the final seconds of the game. This time, the team was watching their season vanish in the final seconds of the game.

Central Bucks West.....25

Truman ..............7

Coach Randy Cuthbert has enRICHed his backfield. Proving that he’s an innovative coach who is ready to put his own wrinkles into the playbook, Coach Cuthbert moved Gene Rich to the fullback position Friday night against the Truman Tigers. Rich, who earned All-State honors last year as a guard, carried the ball 14 times for 66 yards and scored all three West touchdowns against the Tigers of Harry S. Truman.

During West’s first possession, Rich carried the ball 6 times, including the last 5 plays of the series and scored from the 1-yard line with a little more than 7 minutes left in the first quarter. The Bucks drove 65 yards on their first possession and then drove 48 yards after the Tigers muffed on the kickoff to jump ahead 14-0. When the rushing game started to sputter QB Joe DiGiacomo found Kyle Myers (2 for 43 yards) or Dan Brown (1 for 9 yards) open for important first downs. On West’s third possession, Jim Wiberly kicked a 37-yard field goal against a stiff crosswind.

The Tigers proved to be a tenacious opponent. Although their passing game never got off the ground, the Delaware Wing-T offense was well executed with Lenegan (18 for 80 yards) and Rosetti (11 for 71) rushing for long yardage at times. The misdirection in the backfield, dark uniforms and a poorly-lit field kept the Bucks on their toes.

In the third quarter, the Bucks dominated time of possession with a long and impressive drive that culminated in another Rich TD. The 21-play drive used a cast of players including Jim Fagnani (12 for 67), Aaron Kennedy (3 for 12), Jim Mitchell (8 for 50) and Clay Lepley (3 for 7). The drive was supported by the superb blocking power of Justin Outten, Mike Weir, Mike Winn, and Marat Mamedov. Chris McGinn ran an end-around for the 2-point conversion after the TD to bring the score to 25-7 in the fourth.

With the win against Truman, the Bucks are looking ahead to Pennridge for the final game of the regular season. The Pennridge coaches might be looking for a good iron for the new wrinkles they saw in the Bucks’ backfield.

Central Bucks West.....35

Bensalem................6

The Bucks of CB West kept on marching towards the Suburban I play-offs by dominating the Bensalem Owls at War Memorial Field in Doylestown Friday night. If there was concern of a let down after an emotional game last week the Bucks shook it off in the same way Jim Fagnani shook off 3 tackles on his way to a 64-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

QB Joe DiGiacomo (9 for14 passing) hit Dan Brown for a 17-yard TD pass in the first quarter. In the second quarter DiGiacomo’s favorite receiver was senior Kyle Myers with whom he connected on the next three possessions giving the Bucks a 27-0 comfort zone at halftime. Fagnani’s 64-yard TD run in the third quarter stretched the lead to 35-0 and invoked the running clock. Once the mercy rule was in effect, West kept the ball on the ground, even letting Gene Rich and Justin Outten get in on the action. Rich ran the ball into the end zone on the extra point conversion but Outten had difficulty hanging onto the pigskin on his try.

On offense Gene Rich, Justin Outten, Mike Weir, and Sean Burke provided plenty of protection for DiGiacomo. Frank Kish (3 for 18 yards), Jim Mitchell (5 for 27 yards), Aaron Kennedy (7 for 72 yards), Jim Fagnani (9 for102 yards), Pete Hamill (1 for 10 yards), Joe DiGiacomo (8 for 36 yards) and others rushed for a combined yardage of 282 yards.

Mike Winn and Andrew Ackley frustrated the Owls while on defense. Chris McGinn had his first interception of the season. The Bucks continue to march. The beat goes on.

Central Bucks East......6

The Bucks of Central Bucks West showed CB East and everyone else that they have not forgotten how to play football the CB West way…run it up the middle and down their throats. The win punctuated the 18th consecutive victory for the Bucks over their cross-town rival CB East. The win was also an important Suburban I victory. Both sides came into the contest with a 4-2 over-all record and each team needed the win to stay in the District 1 playoff race. But no one needed to remind either team of the importance of an "East-West" game.

The Bucks’offense was not in the least way intimidated by the pre-game press about East’s strong defense. West made an impressive opening statement with a 76-yard touchdown drive that took nearly 8 minutes of the first quarter. Senior fullback Jim Fagnani (18 carries for 100-yards rushing) carried the ball seven times behind the combined forces of "Smash and Bash" Justin Outten and Gene Rich. Then on fourth down Joe DiGiacomo found Derek Kinzel wide open for a 31-yard touchdown pass.

Rich and Outten, along with Steve Moll, Mike Weir, and Sean Burke, opened wide holes all night for Jim Fagnani, Jim Mitchell, Clay Lepley, and Aaron Kennedy to power through. Andrew Ackley, Doug Ortiz, and Mike Winn combined forces on defense by taking players out at the knees, containing receivers, or knocking balls down allowing only five plays from scrimmage in the first quarter. The second quarter brought more of the same as the Bucks smashed the Patriots’ front seven on a 75-yard drive that took nearly 7 minutes. This time Jim Mitchell (8 carries for 52 yards) and Fagnani took turns following the O-line surge. Joe DiGiacomo pushed the lead to 14-0 with a play-action pass to Mitchell from 4 yards out and the score. Jim Wiberly punched in the extra points and then dazzled the crowd with a kick-off that sent the pigskin into the end zone preventing any thought of East returning the ball beyond the 20-yard line.

The West defensive backs of Aaron Kennedy, Doug Ortiz and Andrew Ackley effectively shut down the Patriots’ offense. Josh Felicetti was held to 7-of-22 completions for the night. Joe DiGiacomo (6-of-9 completions), made the score 21-0 with a 5-yard keeper in the fourth quarter. It looked like it would be a shutout for the Bucks, but the Patriots scored as time expired to make the final score 21-6.

The West student fans stormed the field after the game happy to see the rumors of an upset squelched. The older fans were content to watch from the stands and see the familiar look of the team they’ve followed for years return to War Memorial Field.

Pennsbury..............14

"All we wanted to do was beat West," said Pennsbury senior George Carr. Many teams in Suburban One have the same sentiment. That’s the reason a team like CB West cannot afford to have a "down" week. Keeping a group of 16, 17, and 18 year olds "up" week after week is sometimes a monumental task in itself. Couple that with preparing new offensive plays and tailoring a defense for your latest foe and you have a huge task.

CB West found their rushing game against Pennsbury with 222 total yards rushing. Pennsbury was held to 65 yards rushing for the night. But even with those stats, the fans were on the edge of their seats with the score tied 14-14 until 1:02 left in the fourth quarter. Aaron Kennedy set up the score when he sprinted down field and recovered a muffed punt. The punt glanced off receiver James Fagan and Kennedy was able to pick it up in stride and run towards the end zone unaware that a player could not advance the ball on a punt muff. The Bucks were able to eventually score on the recovery when Kennedy, a former quarterback, threw a halfback option pass to Jim Mitchell for 26 yards and a score.

Pennsbury put the pressure on early in the game by scoring first on a 25-yard pass play to sophomore Kevin Michaud. West answered on a 45-yard touchdown run by Jim Mitchell who was returning to the playing field after an injury sustained in the St. Joe’s game. West took the lead on a 12-yard pass from QB Joe DiGiacomo to Kyle Myers just before the half. Early in the third quarter Pennsbury tied the score after a fumble recovery on the 43-yard line but then the CBW defense went to work allowing only three more first downs and 19 yards for the remainder of the game. Pennsbury’s offensive did not get back on the field until after Mitchell’s score late in the fourth quarter.

The Bucks should not have any trouble getting up for next week’s match-up against cross-town rival CB East. West’s District I play-off hopes could be determined by the outcome of the game.

Neshaminy..............21

The CB West defense knew they had to stop Jamar Brittingham if they were to overcome the Redskins of Neshaminy. Jim Mitchell and Andrew Ackley knew they had their work cut out for them along with the rest of the Bucks’ defense. Brittingham, who averages over 200 yards per game, was held to 116 yards on 24 carries. But in the end it was Jamar’s mere presence on the field that did in the Bucks’ defense.

The Bucks of CBW battled back from a 15-0 halftime deficit to take the lead with 1:57 left in the game. On an amazing series of first downs that took the Redskins down to the 6-yard line the Bucks were able to stop Jamar Brittingham three times. It looked like the Bucks would be the team to upset the Redskins of Neshaminy for the first time this season. But with no timeouts and 7 seconds left on the clock, quarterback Jason Waiter was able to get off one last play. The Bucks bit on Waiter’s play-action fake to Brittingham and left tight end Scott Mullin alone in the endzone for 6 points as the clock ran down to 00:00.

In the second half fullback Doug Kniese (16 for 62 yards rushing) scored twice and Clay Lepley (12 for 62 yards rushing) found the endzone from the 1-yard line for the third CBW touchdown. Coach Cuthbert called for the 2-point conversion on two of the three TD’s but the attempts failed. Kicker Jim Wiberly converted the PAT when called upon. QB Joe DiGiacomo (7-15 for 123 yards passing) excited the near capacity crowd when he connected with Kyle Myers (2-47), Chris McGinn (2-44), Aaron Kennedy (2-23) and Jim Fagnani (1-9). Justin Outten, who returned to the lineup after an ankle injury, Gene Rich, Dan Lowery, Steve Moll, and Jeff Moberg led the Bucks’ defense in one of the most exciting regular season games in recent memory.

Council Rock............14

Life as we know it returned to CBW this week. The Bucks not only beat Council Rock but won the contest with several changes to the first string line-up. The Rock’s 14 points were allowed late in the game when the starters were on the sideline.

CBW built a 21-0 halftime lead and extended it to 28-0 by stringing together several big plays. Senior FB Clay Lepley had a 61-yard TD run. Aaron Kennedy, who was moved to halfback this week, had a 60-yard TD run. QB Joe DiGiacomo (9 for15, 181 yards passing) connected with Chris McGinn for 58 yards just before Doug Kniese took it into the end zone on a 7-yard carry for the touchdown. Earlier in the game DiGiacomo connected with Kyle Myers (2 for 32-yards), Aaron Kennedy (2 for 25-yards), Derek Kinzel (2 for 49-yards) and Clay Lepley (1 for 12-yards).

The O-line had a different look as well. Dan Lowery had a new position at center while Mike Winn and Steve Moll helped Gene Rich open up some room for running. Jeff Moberg and Jim Fagnani continued to cause chaos to the Rock’s backfield.

North Penn.......... 20

The mood was somber before the game at Crawford Stadium in Lansdale Friday night. Many fans that arrived early held candles in honor of the victims of Tuesday’s tragedy. At game time, the teams, cheerleaders, and both bands filed quietly onto the field. The usual pre-game festivities were absent this Friday night. North Penn High School principal Steve Frederick addressed the teams and fans and asked everyone to be silent, to remember the dead, to keep their families and loved ones in their thoughts and to thank the rescuers for their bravery. Then everyone joined NP senior Alex Orjera in singing the National Anthem. Although most college games and all NFL games were postponed this weekend, the local school districts felt that it was important for the kids to continue "business as usual" in order to help them deal with the national disaster.

When the game got underway, it was business as usual. The only difference was the team moving the ball down the field on a long and impressive scoring drive that ate up the clock was blue…not the familiar black and gold. When the Bucks got the ball on offense in the first half, nothing seemed to work. It was as though NP had the CBW playbook. And why wouldn’t they … with Mike Pettine, Sr. in the booth for NP making adjustments to plays he possibly wrote. Although first year CBW coach Randy Cuthbert has added some new "wrinkles" it is basically the same playbook created by Mike Pettine, Sr. who now assists Michael Pettine, Jr. at North Penn.

The NP Knights were well prepared for battle. They took advantage of 3 CBW fumbles, resulting in a TD and 2 field goals. QB Dane Mengel-Spurio completed 4 passes for 48 yards while Joe DiGiacomo completed 3 for 19 yards. Joe had a rough night in the backfield. He was sacked 6 times and had a total of 60 yards netted in offense to NP 182 yards total offense. NP controlled the offensive and defensive lines of scrimmage for most of the night. Senior fullback Clay Lepley carried the ball 5 times for 34 yards and Aaron Kennedy had 10 carries for 31 yards. Senior Kyle Myers was 2 for 23 yards receiving and James West was held to 28 yards rushing before he had to leave the game in the third quarter due to a threatening knee injury. Justin Outten came out of the game early as well due to a persistent ankle injury but will likely be back next week.

The Bucks left Crawford Stadium exhausted and somber for their loss. Each passing year, the CBW Bucks feel the weight of past teams and records on their shoulders. The statistics for the CBW Bucks are staggering … this is the first regular-season loss since 1995, a 57 regular-season game winning streak was broken, and the first regular-season road loss since 1983. But this young CBW team has also had a harsh and valuable lesson in world civics this week and knows that fortunately for them, life will go on even when you lose a football game.

Abington............ 14

How far could a lineman run if he could get his hands on the ball? Gene Rich got his chance Saturday night to run with the football … and did he ever run! Late in the first quarter, as Abington was threatening to score and to tie the ball game, Abington’s Leon Stone attempted to blast into the CBW defensive line around the 5-yard line. Out of the pile emerged Gene Rich with the football. Hearing no whistle, Rich started running down the sideline returning it for 64 yards before being pushed out of bounds. Aaron Kennedy finished the job two plays later for 32 yards and a touchdown creating a 14-point lead instead of a tie ball game.

Several CBW players added to the score along with Kennedy including Jim Fagnani on a 20-yard TD pass from Joe DiGiacomo, and TD runs from Clay Lepley, James West, Derek Kinzel, Doug Ortiz, and Joe DiGiacomo. Kyle Myers caught a 31-yard pass in the third quarter before the starters came out of the game. CBW offense racked up 430 total yards to Abington’s 260 for the night. Justin Outten, Gene Rich, Kyle McNealy, Steve Moll and many other Bucks won the war in the trenches for CB West.

St. Joe's Prep .......... 17

Lightning was not the only force to be reckoned with in Doylestown as St. Joe’s Prep discovered Friday night at War Memorial Field. The CB West Bucks started a new era under the leadership of Coach Randy Cuthbert with a 21 – 17 win over the perennial Philadelphia Catholic league powerhouse.

The game was delayed with 1:50 left in the fourth quarter because of lightning. Both teams left the field and most of the fans went home. At the time of the delay, the young Bucks were facing the biggest play of the game. They resumed play after 20 minutes with the ball on the 40 yard line with a 3rd down and 5 yards to go. Joe DiGiacomo, first year QB for the Bucks, faked a hand off to RB James West, pumped as he rolled out to his left, then turned and ran up the middle for the necessary yardage to maintain control of the ball and ballgame for the Bucks. Without an opportunity to have the ball on offense, St. Joe’s had to accept their fate.

In the first half, Senior Aaron Kennedy scampered 70 yards for the first TD of the game. St. Joe’s answered with a drive topped off with a 13-yard pass to Mike Malley from QB Vince Gallagher. After a 53-yard TD pass to James West, the half-time score was CBW 14 – St. Joe’s 7.

In the second half St. Joe’s capitalized on an interception for a field goal and a recovered fumble for a touchdown by RB Kyle Ambrogi. Needing a score in the beginning of the fourth quarter, Joe DiGiacomo found tight end Kyle Myers open in the end zone on a 4-yard pass. Jim Wiberly split the uprights for extra points after each touchdown. Coach Cuthbert had to look to his sideline during the night as many players were suffering from muscle cramping on this warm and humid evening. Derek Kinzel, Doug Ortiz, and Jim Fagnani shared duties running the ball along with James West and Aaron Kennedy. Gene Rich, Justin Outten, and Sean Burke all worked overtime against a very big SJ line while Jeff Moberg and Clay Lepley created havoc for the SJ backfield.
