Knights Power Past Bucks

Central Bucks West traveled to Lansdale on Halloween night to face the unbeaten Knights of   North Penn.   A win would keep the Bucks slim playoffs hopes alive.  By the time the final seconds ticked off the clock to end the season, the Bucks had absorbed a 41-7 at the hands of the “scarily-good” Knights.

The West defense started strongly, holding the powerful Knights offense in check on the first series. The Bucks offense was unable to penetrate the Knights defense and was also forced to punt.

On its second possession, North Penn drove to the Bucks 23-yard line.  Fullback Jim Casertano opened the scoring with a strong run and NP hit the extra point for a 7-0 lead.  Unable to move the ball on its next possession, West punted the ball back to the Knights, who scored their second touchdown, this time on a 21-yard run by Kevin Akins.

West made some noise early in the second quarter, when a blitzing Mike Hajatian forced a NP fumble that was recovered by Eric Matje in North Penn territory.  Taking advantage of the turnover, the West offense moved to the Knights 3-yard line. Joe McMonagle, who had a 33-yard run on the drive, scored a Bucks touchdown and Andrew Sommers extra point cut the lead to 14-7 with 6:04 left in the half.

North Penn quickly extended its lead to 21-7 on a 71-yard run by Akins with just under three minutes left in the half.  They followed that up with a 7-yard scoring pass from Adam Hearns to Deanco Oliver with 15 seconds left to take a 28-7 lead into the half.

Facing the daunting task of trying to overcome the Knights lead, the Bucks received the second half kickoff.  As was the case for most of the first half, West could not muster any significant yardage despite some tough play by linemen Joe Moran and Mike Fagnani.

North Penn scored a touchdown in the third quarter on another long run by the speedy Akins to move to a 35-7 lead.  The final score of the night came on a 70-yard run by quarterback Hearns.

Since the first split of Central Bucks schools in the late 1960’s, the only CB West can lay claim to the fact that it has never had a losing season. By virtue of its 6-4 record, the 2003 kept that streak alive. Thanks go out to the players for their hard work.  Good luck to the seniors as they move on, and to the underclassmen who will get ready for next year at either CB West or CB South.

West Drops Close One to East

All eyes were on Doylestown Saturday night as The 6-2 Bucks faced the 6-2 Patriots.  A possible playoff slot and school district supremacy were on the line.  When the game ended, East held a 17-10 lead and a tighter grip on a playoff slot.

The game began with great promise.  The Patriots found themselves deep in their own territory following the opening kickoff and the defense kept them there.  East punted following three unsuccessful plays, and West’s Ed Seeger returned the ball to the Patriots side of the field.

West made the most of its opportunity.  Mixing strong runs and a timely pass, the Bucks drove to the East 4-yard line.   The West faithful erupted with cheers when Mike Hajatian burst into the end zone for the game’s first score.  Andrew Sommers’s PAT put the Bucks ahead 7-0.

East responded immediately to the West score.  Getting good field position following the kickoff, East moved the ball to the West 34.  East got on the board when Bill McDonnell took off on a 34 yard run.  The Patriots evened the score at 7 by hitting the extra point.

West consumed the fine 6:47 seconds with a scoring drive.  West took the ball down to the East 5 yard line.  As time was winding down, the field goal team sprinted onto the field and Sommers booted 22 yard field goal as the clock hit zero.  As the teams trotted off the field, West held a 10-7 lead and seemingly, the momentum.

The Bucks received the second half kickoff but were unable to move against the East defense.  The Patriots took over took at their own 35 following the West punt.  They gained the lead shortly thereafter on a 22-yard shovel pass from McDonnell to James Bowes.  The PAT gave the Patriots a 14-10 lead that they maintained through the remainder of the third quarter.

West was unable to move the ball on its second possession and gave the ball back to the Patriots who extended their lead to 17-10 on a 21 yard field goal early in the fourth quarter.  Both teams exchanged possessions, and West forced East to punt with a little over 4 minutes remaining in the game.  East put West in a deep hole by downing the punt on the two yard line.

Working against both the East defense and the clock, the Bucks were able to move the ball to mid-field.  Hajatian took a pass from Joe McMonagle and stopped the clock with 20 seconds remaining. Unfortunately, the play was called back and confusion reigned as the zebras struggled to figure out down, distance, and time remaining.  The game resumed once the appropriate time was put back on the board.  The comeback was not to be as two passes fell incomplete and the Patriots took the ball and the game.

The Bucks will hit the practice field to prepare to face unbeaten North Penn on Halloween night.

Bucks Splash Past ‘Skins

The 3-4 Neshaminy Redskins came to Doylestown looking to halt their losing skid and end Central Bucks West’s playoff hopes.  At the end of a cold, rainy night the Bucks’ playoff chances were still alive following a dominant 28-14 win.

The Redskins took the opening kick off and moved into West territory with a 13-play drive.  The defense stiffened and forced Nehaminy to try a 37-yard field goal that went wide left. The Bucks offense took over following the missed field goal and gave notice as to what was to come the rest of the night. Working behind a strong offensive line, the Bucks rammed the ball right down the throat of the Neshaminy defense.  The drive ended with Tony DiBrino scoring on a 6-yard run to put the Bucks on top.  There was trouble with the snap on the extra point, but Joe McMonagle picked it up and scampered into the end zone to make the score 8-0.

West upped its lead to 14-0 in the second quarter on a 12-yard run by McMonagle at the end of another long time consuming drive.  The ball took a crazy bounce on the ensuing kickoff and Matt Ruane pounced on it to give the Bucks the ball at the Redskins 27.  Two plays later Mike Hajatian scored on a 25-yard run, and Andrew Sommers added the PAT to give the Bucks a 21-0 lead.

In danger of being blown out by half-time, Neshaminy got back to within two touchdowns on a 34 yard pass from Stu Madden to Rodney Davis.  With the extra point, the Redskins narrowed the gap to 21-7 as the teams headed off the field for the half.

The Bucks opened the second half kickoff and chewed up yardage and time.  Their 15-play 78-yard drive ended with at 16-yard pass to wide open Kevin Dunn in the end zone.  With the successful extra point, the Bucks once again held a three-score lead at 28-7.

Neshaminy cut the Bucks lead to two touchdowns on another 34-yard pass from Madden to Davis .  After the extra point, the Bucks lead was 28-14 with 34 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Bucks got the ball back on their own 20 and controlled the ball with a punishing time-consuming drive that effectively salted away the win.  Although they did not score, CB West held the ball for 15-plays, covered 78 yards and ran more than 8 minutes off the clock.  The defense held the Redskins off the board to complete the victory.

The story of the game was the performance of the interior offensive line of Nick Bromm, Mike Fagnani, Dominic Rocconi, Craig Quedenfeld, and Mike Cristinzio.  The Bucks O-line completely dominated the line of scrimmage, enabling the backs to rack up over 300 rushing yards.  Joe McMonagle led the rushing attack with 145 yards on 16 carries and also completed 5 of 6 passes for 60 yards.

The Bucks return to practice on Monday to get ready for a Saturday night game with traditional rival CB East, a 38-7 loser to North Penn.

Bucks Break Bulls

Determined to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Bucks made the long trip Delaware County to face once-beaten Glen Mills.  At the conclusion of the game, CB West left beautiful Harry Pearson Stadium with a 14-6 win.

The Bucks opened the scoring late in the first quarter when Brandon King went in from the 7-yard line.  Andrew Sommers PAT gave the Bucks a 7-0 lead.  The defense held the Bulls without a first down, giving the ball back to the offense early in the second quarter.  The mixing a few passes in with the strong running  of King and Mike Hajatian, the Bucks drove to the Bulls one yard-line.  Joe McMonagle went the final yard for the score and Sommers’ extra point ran the Bucks lead to 14-0 at the half.

The second half was primarily a defensive struggle.  Nick Lucas, Jon West, Eric Matje, Greg Rissinger, and Dean Bowser consistently beat the Bulls line, and linebackers Hajatian and Brandon Navarre, Matt Giedgowd contributed several key hits.

Glen Mills did manage to score against this tough unit.  The key play on the drive was a long pass that got the Bulls out of a hole.  They capped the drive with a two-yard run for the score.   West once again blocked an extra point to keep the lead at 14-6.

With 5:16 left in the game it was up to the offense to control the ball and keep it away from Glen Mills.  The O-line took control of the line of scrimmage and strong runs by Hajatian, King, Anthony Cappiello, and Russ Macchione enabled the Bucks to eat up the remaining time on the clock for the win.

The Bucks return home this Friday to face Neshaminy, a 35-17 loser to North Penn.

Falcons Beat Bucks

Friday night’s game featured the Bucks and Falcons of Pennsbury each coming in with 4-1 records.  At the end of the evening, the Falcons left Doylestown with a 27-10 victory over CB West.

Pennsbury got things rolling on their second possession.  The Falcons used deception, power, and speed to move the ball deep into West territory.  Pennsbury finished off the drive with an 11-yard run by Brandon Goldware to take a 7-0 lead with the PAT.

West got things going a little bit with a drive into Pennsbury territory in the second quarter.  The drive stalled and the Bucks got on the board with a 33 yard field goal by Andew Sommers to trim the lead to 7-3.

Pennsbury then put 10 unanswered points on the board with a 25-yard field goal and a 53-yard touchdown reception by Kervin Michaud.  When the half ended, West was looking at a 17-3 deficit.

The Bucks came out with a strong-looking drive to open the second half.  West moved deep into Falcons territory behind the passing of Kevin Dunn and running of Tony DiBrino.  Unfortunately the drive ended with a fumble at the 6-yard line.

The defense forced the Falcons to punt after the fumble, but the offense was not able to move the ball with the success of its opening drive.  Pennsbury extended its lead to 24-3 on a 55-yard run by Michaud in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter saw the Bucks close the gap to 24-10 on a two yard run by Dunn and extra point by Sommers.  The Falcons answered that score with a drive that concluded with a 4-yard touchdown run by Goldware. The Bucks blocked extra point attempt to keep the score at 30-10.  West fought hard to the end, putting a touchdown on the board late in the game on an 8-yard pass from Dunn to Ed Seeger to make the final score 30-16.

West will get back to the practice field to regroup and get ready for another one-loss opponent.  The Bucks take on Glen Mills, a 45-19 loser to North Penn this past week.

Bucks Bash Owls
Working with a short week, the Bucks headed to the lower end of the county on Thursday night to take on the Owls of Bensalem.  The host Owls came into the game a much better team than their 1-3 record indicated, having lost late to East the week before and to Ridley by 3 points earlier in the season. At the end of the night, the Bucks came home with their fourth straight win, 27-12.

The Owls showed they are a team to be reckoned with by putting together an impressive opening drive.  They moved 63 yards in seven plays, but Brandon Navarre blocked the extra point, to keep the lead at 6-0.

West responded with a long drive on its second possession that concluded with Tony DiBrino recovering a fumble in the end zone to tie the score.  Andrew Sommers’ extra point gave the Bucks the lead at 7-6.  The lead was short-lived, because on the ensuing kickoff the Owls Ricky Williams returned the ball 85 yards for a touchdown. The try for two failed and Bensalem led 12-7.

West was unable to move the ball and the Owls took and looked to increase their lead by driving into West territory.  At this point the defense stepped up and stunned Owls with several key plays.  Nick Lucas who seemed to be in the Bensalem backfield all night dropped the Owls running back for a loss.  Lucas and Eric Matje also began to get pressure on the Owls quarterback, and when he looked to a pass in the flat, Navarre picked it off and went 88 yards for the score.  Although the two-point conversion failed, the Bucks now led 13-12.

In the second half, West returned to smash-mouth football to grind out the win.  On a drive that began in part way through the third quarter, the Bucks went 74 yards on 16 plays to take a 20-12 lead when Brandon King scored on a 12 yard run.  The drive ate up nearly seven and half minutes on the clock and featured two fourth and one conversions.

West sealed the victory with a short drive on which Joe McMonagle went the final 13 yards for the touchdown.  Sommers’s PAT provided the final point of the night making the score West 27, Bensalem 12.

The Bucks defense settled in and took control of the game in the second half, allowing the Owls only 40 yards of offense.  The defense was also very opportunistic, getting interceptions from Matt Giedgowd, Navarre , and two from McMonagle.  The line and linebackers shut down Bensalem’s quick strike offense, and totally confused and harassed the quarterback. The offensive line once again wore down the opponent with key blocks coming from Craig Quedenfeld and Greg Rissinger.  In all the backs ran for 279 yards, with King leading the pack with 124 on 27 carries and Mike Hajatian providing tough runs in key short-yardage situations.

The Bucks return home on Friday to begin a stretch of games against tough Patriot Division foes.  First up is Pennsbury, which comes in with a 4-1 record following its victory over Abington.

Bucks Thrash the Panthers
CB West went to Warminster on Saturday looking for win number three.  Standing in their path was a tough William Tennent squad.  When all was said and done, the Bucks put the Panthers aside 24-7.

Things began with a bang when Ed Seeger returned the opening kick for what appeared to be a game-opening touchdown.  Unfortunately, a holding call negated the score, and the Bucks started deep in their own territory.  Unable to move the ball, West was forced to punt.  Tennent took over on the West 41-yard line and immediately unfurled a trick play for a long touchdown.  The extra point made the score 7-0 early in the first quarter.

On its next possession, the Bucks returned to their bread and butter running attack.  Brandon King ripped off a long run that set West up deep in Tennent territory. When Joe McMonagle hit Kevin Dunn with a 22-yard scoring pass, West had pulled to within one, and Andrew Sommers' PAT tied the score at 7-7.

The West defense, which continues to impress each week, made things happen all day.  The Bucks forced and recovered a Tennent fumble following a completed pass.  When the drive stalled, Andrew Sommers came in and nailed a 25-yard field goal to give the Bucks a lead they would never relinquish at 10-7.

West moved to 17-7 lead in the second quarter with its trademark power running game.  The offensive line of Craig Quedenfeld, Nick Bromm, Mike Fagnani, Tim Kendrick, and Mike Cristinzio seized control of the line of scrimmage, and the Bucks to moved to the 6-yard line on the tough running of several backs. Brandon King finished the drive with his first varsity touchdown, and Sommers again hit the PAT.  With big hits by Kendrick, Dean Bowser, and Mike Hajatian, the defense made the lead stand up at halftime.

There was plenty of hard hitting defense in the second half and neither team was able to score in the third quarter.  West increased its lead in the fourth quarter, as the ground game and line took its toll on the beleaguered Panther defense.  McMonagle threw his second TD pass of the day, this time hitting Russ Macchione in the back of the end zone for a 10-yard scoring play.  The reliable Sommers drove his third extra point through the uprights and West had a 24-7 lead.

To its credit, Tennent did not give up and briefly threatened to score mid-way through fourth quarter.  That drive was thwarted when Matt Ruane picked off a throw to the end zone.  The offense ran out the clock, and the third "W" in a row was in the books.  The Bucks will work with a short week getting ready to face a Bensalem team that lost a close 14-7 game at CB East

West Slogs By Council Rock North

Under threatening skies, Central Bucks West traveled to Newtown on Saturday to take on Council Rock North.  In what would turn out to be a low-scoring affair, West prevailed 10-7 in a mud bath.

Both teams struggled to sustain drives in the first quarter, playing under adverse field conditions.  At the beginning of the second quarter, the Indians used a big play to take a 7-0 lead a 50-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Travis Manger to tight end Sean Rozzi.

While West had several drives that threatened the Indians, they bogged down in the muck at the southern end of the stadium.  The Bucks mustered a drive late in the half that took them to the CR North 7-yard line with under a minute to go.  The sloppy field made it tough going, as three passes fell incomplete.  Andrew Sommers hit a 25-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3 as the horn sounded for the end of the half.  Although they trailed on the scoreboard, West had controlled time of possession, which would prove helpful in the second half

In the third quarter, West took control of the scoreboard with an 11-play, 53 yard scoring drive.  The drive which consisted entirely of running plays behind the strong blocking of the O-line, ended with Joe McMonagle scoring on a quarterback sneak.  Andrew Sommers’ PAT kick gave West a 10-7 lead.

West’s defense, which had throttled Council Rock’s offense for much of the game, thwarted the Indian offense for the remainder of the game.  Brandon Navarre and Dean Bowser each made a tackle in the Indians backfield on short yardage plays.  Other than the scoring play in the first half, the closest North would get to the West end zone all day was a short drive in the fourth quarter that ended on the Bucks 30 yard line.

Although the final score was close, it is not indicative of the way that West controlled the ball and the game.  When all was said and done, the Bucks had out gained the Indians by nearly a two to one margin.  The defense once again put on a strong performance; the offensive line wore down the opponent; and, showing great depth, several backs displayed strong running and blocking ability.  West now goes for its third win in a row when it faces William Tennent in Warminster on Friday night.  The hard-hitting Panthers are coming off a last-minute one-point loss to CB East.

West Tops Pennridge in a Thriller

In the days leading up to Friday’s game, much was written and spoken about the performance and future prospects of the 2003 CB West football team – and not much of it was flattering following their opening game loss.  While West was faced with a lot of negativity, the Pennridge Rams heard nothing but positive after their impressive Week One win.  If you believed the talk, Friday night’s game was going to be miserable for the Bucks.  So much for talk!  When it was all over, the Bucks had the “experts” eating crow with an exciting come-from behind, 26-21 victory over the heavily favored Rams.

West made an early statement that this game would not be a cakewalk for Pennridge with a strong defensive effort on the first series.  A sack of the Rams quarterback on third down forced Pennridge to punt on fourth down.  When the snap sailed over the punter’s head, the Bucks were in business inside Pennridge territory.  West moved the ball to the 11-yard line, and opened the scoring with a touchdown run by Tony DiBrino.  Joe McMonagle’s PAT made the score 7-0 West.

Pennridge immediately answered with a scoring drive of its own, finalizing with a 2 yard-run by quarterback Blair Dameron.  The extra point knotted the score at 7-7.

The Bucks then went on a drive of their own, culminating with a 3-yard scoring run by McMonagle.  The point after attempt was wide and West led 13-7.

Pennridge’s Wing-T offense began to click in the second quarter.  The Rams scored on a halfback option, with Tom Cressman finding his tight end open in the end zone for 23-yard scoring pass.  Pennridge took a 14-13 lead with a successful kick.

They extended their lead to 21-13 with 2:12 left in the half on a 15-yard scoring pass from Dameron to Virnelson and successful PAT.

West received the second half kickoff and found itself bottled-up deep in its own territory.  After a sack, the Bucks were forced to punt.  A strong rush by Pennridge coupled with a low snap did not allow the Bucks to get off the punt and the Rams took over deep in West territory.  It appeared that the momentum was clearly on the Rams side when their offense took the field.  But appearances can be deceiving.  The West defense rose up with a tremendous effort forcing a field goal attempt on fourth down.  The Bucks got strong penetration and Mike Hajatian got a hand on the ball, denying the Rams any additional points.

The Bucks moved the ball well, but were forced to punt on fourth down from mid-field.  It was at this point that the Bucks went into their bag of tricks, using an extremely well timed fake punt call.  McMonagle found Brandon Navarre with a pass for a first down to extend the drive.  When McMonagle scored his second 3-yard touchdown, the Bucks had pulled within 2 points.  The 2-point conversion was unsuccessful, and West now trailed 21-19.

West had the Rams pinned deep in their own territory when Navarre downed a punt at the 2.  Pennridge got out of trouble with a long run by Cressman to mid field.  They then moved deep into the red zone.  The Bucks defense again thwarted the Rams, when Brandon King forced a fumble causing the Rams to loose significant yardage.  The Pennridge fake field goal did not fool the Bucks and it was time for some dramatics.

With an injured Joe McMonagle on the bench, Kevin Dunn took over at quarterback.  West started on its 15 and it looked like they would have to give possession back to the Rams when a third down play came up short.  A late hit on the play, however, gave the Bucks new life.  Facing fourth and forever, Dunn found Jon West down the right sideline for 30 yards.  Although West made a spectacular diving catch, the crowd had to wait while the officials conferred.  When they ruled that the catch was good, the drive continued. West faced yet another fourth and long after a penalty negated a long run by Anthony Cappiello.  Dunn worked his fourth down magic once more.  This time he broke out of pressure and it appeared he would try to run for the first down.  Instead, he stopped on a dime at the line of scrimmage and found Eric Matje wide open for a 35-yard touchdown pass.  With the successful extra point, West owned a 26-21 lead with 35 seconds left in the game.

Not content to go quietly, Pennridge made things a little too interesting for the West faithful.  With time running down, Dameron threw a screen pass to running back Ryan Greiser.  Greiser took the pass and cut across the field where several West defenders cut him off.  As Greiser slid out of bounds the clock hit zeros and the Bucks had earned a hard-fought victory.

The local paper also made a point to predict that the Rams were likely to make history by being the first team to beat West three straight years.  On Friday night the 2003 Bucks made sure that they will have to write that story another day by turning in a strong team performance. According to Coach Cuthbert:  “This was a total team effort.  This week everyone, including second and third team players stepped in performed well.  Week One was too early to write us off.”   The Bucks will attempt to make it two in a row when they face Council Rock North in Newtown on Saturday.

West drops 2003 opener
All eyes were on War Memorial Field Friday night for the opening of the 2003 season.   The Bucks' opponent was the highly-touted Red Rovers of Easton.  The two schools had not met on the field since the state playoffs in the early 1990's when West eliminated Easton twice in the semifinals.  Having not advanced far enough to meet the Bucks since then, Easton came to Doylestown with long memories and a shot at avenging the losses from the previous decade.

West won the toss and elected to defer the decision until the second half, so Easton started on offense.  The game was a defensive struggle for the first quarter and most of the second.  Strong line play by Greg Rissinger, Eric Matje, Tim Kendrick and Dean Bowser spearheaded an aggressive defense which kept Easton off the board. West showed the first signs of opening the scoring with a 17-play drive that took almost nine minutes.  Joe McMonagle hit Tony DiBrino with a 15 yard pass that gave the Bucks a first down on the Easton 12 yard line.  A loss on first down and an incomplete pass on second down put West in third and long.  Easton's defense rose to the occasion with a momentum changing play, dropping the Bucks for a 17 yard loss that took them out of field goal range.

Perhaps inspired by their defense, the Easton's offense came to life with a nine-play 73-yard drive for the game's first score.   Running backs Bill Piperata  and Ovid Goulbourne combined for 61 of the yards on the drive, which was capped off with a 20-yard run by Piperata with 4:18 left in the half.  With the successful PAT, Easton led 7-0.

West was unable to sustain a drive, and Easton got the ball back late in the half.  On its first play, Easton hit the Bucks with a gimmick play for a quick score.  Flanker Josh Baltz took a lateral and hit tight end Kris Bisci with a 46-yard pass for the score with 1:48 left in the half.  Easton led 14-0 at the half after the kick.

The second half was again a defensive struggle with Easton linebacker Jason Groller making several nice plays, while Rissinger (gutting it out with a bad shoulder) made several outstanding plays for West.  Piperata scored the only touchdown of the half on another 20-yard run late in the third quarter, moving the score to 20-0.

According to Coach Cuthbert (as quoted in the Sunday Intelligencer), "We had a lot of opportunities and we didn't convert."  So it's back to practice to get ready for Pennridge, a 33-6 winner over CB East.
