Last Saturday, the Bucks faced off against the Methacton Warriors on a windy homecoming weekend.  The Bucks were looking to even their conference slate with a victory.  They did not disappoint, as they out-muscled the Warriors the entire afternoon.  West initiated the scoring on a dazzling pass off a reverse from Rob Russell to Dave Mastrangelo that went for 50 yards and a touchdown.  The Bucks were unable to convert the PAT, but had staked a 6-0 lead.  West struck paydirt again in the first half on a 63-yard  touchdown hookup from junior quarterback Wes O’Kula to Junior Andy Russell.  The two-point conversion failed, but Central Bucks West had increased its lead to 12-0.  The Warriors scored all five of their points in the second quarter, coming by way of a safety and a field goal.  The tough defensive stand by the Bucks in the first half would prove to be a harbinger for the entire game, as the Bucks’ suffocating defense had their way with the Warriors.  Coming out of the locker room, the spirited Bucks turned up the wick even more with their smash-mouth brand of offense and defense.  On the first play from scrimmage in the second half, fullback Brandon King rumbled 67 yards to the Warriors end zone on a vintage Central Bucks West run, reminiscent of the Picciotti-Armstrong eras.  King would tally another Bucks’ score with a 3-yard off-tackle run.  This would conclude the scoring for the day for the Bucks as they assumed a 24-5 lead.  There was plenty of glory to go around.  Dave Mastrangelo conducted himself like a rabid Rotweiller that had not eaten in four days, as he accounted for three sacks and another tackle for a loss.  Nick Barba also made his prescence felt with his tenacity on the defensive line.  The Bucks defense held Methacton to only 120 total yards in the contest, while sacking the Warriors quarterback seven times.  On the offensive side, the ‘big play’ Bucks accounted for almost 400 yards without any fumbles during the encounter.  Senior Brandon King put together his most dominating performance of the year as he rushed for 183 yards on only 16 carries.  Senior Zack DeVitis, weightlifter of the year and earth-mover on Saturday opened up a number of key holes to fuel the Bucks’ high-octane running attack.  The Bucks conclude the regular season next Friday night as they host the Bears of Upper Moreland.  A victory would assure a winning record in the conference; as the Bucks are seeking their third victory in the last four games.

                       WEST IS BEST!    GO BUCKS!!

The Bucks of Central Bucks West made the trip down Route 309 for their second Suburban One League American Conference game in five days.  West was looking to put together back to back wins on the road.  However, missed opportunities and big plays on the part of the Trojans would be the theme of the game.  The Bucks fumbled the ball early in the opening drive and Wissahickon would soon capitalize on a Vaughn Jacobs 3-yard touchdown run.  The West defense made a huge play on Wissahickon’s next drive as they forced a fumble and Casey Quedenfeld returned it 48 yards to knot the game at 7.  Unfortunately, Trojan Field did not turn out be very hospitable as Wissahickon added two more touchdown-scoring runs of 11 and 57 yards.  Wissahickon converted both extra points and the score stood at 21-7.  The Bucks appeared to cut into the deficit midway through the second quarter when Brandon King romped 55 yards to the end zone.  However, the play was negated on a holding call.  Wissahickon held a 21-7 lead as the teams entered the locker room.  In the third quarter, West mounted a run as Brandon King scored from the 3 yard line.  The PAT attempt failed, but it appeared that the Bucks had the momentum back on their side as they trailed 24-13.  However, Vaughn Jacobs and the Trojans had other thoughts as he returned the ensuing kickoff 87 yards to the end zone.  Wissahickon added a field goal in the fourth quarter to make the final score 34-13.  There were a number of highlights for the Bucks on Friday night.  Andy Russell gained 35 yards on the ground and 52 yards through the air, Dave Mastrangelo gained 45 yards on a big pass play, and the West defense was able to recover three Trojan fumbles.  Central Bucks West returns home on Friday night as they host Methacton at War Memorial Field.  WEST IS BEST!    GO BUCKS!!

The Bucks traveled to Upper Merion on Monday night to face the Vikings in a Suburban One League American Conference game.  This game had been scheduled for the previous Friday, but was postponed due to the inclement weather conditions the area had experienced late last week.  So, the Bucks and the Vikings squared off in their own version of Monday Night Football.  It seemed that Upper Merion tailback Larry Gaskins would have his way with the Bucks all night as he tallied 75 yards in the first two quarters, including a 47-yard touchdown scamper.  Gaskins’s touchdown and the extra point staked the Vikings to an early 7-0 lead.  West showed a lot of character as they put together an impressive 12-play drive on their ensuing possession.  The drive was capped by a Dave Mastrangelo 4-yard run.  The lengthy drive was made possible by key plays from Mastrangelo, Andy Russell, and Wes O’Kula.  Dylan Hamilton added the PAT.  The Vikings’ early success on the offensive side of the ball  would soon turn into a distant memory as the Bucks’ coaching staff made some excellent and well-timed adjustments.  For the balance of the game, the Upper Merion offense was frustrated as West held the Vikings’ biggest threat, Gaskins, in check.  Brandon King helped tighten the screws for the West defense with a number of key tackles and sacks.  Central Bucks West received the ball to begin the second half and began an 8-play, 70-yard scoring drive that was finished off by a 6-yard touchdown run by Andy Russell.  Andy Russell had 45 of his 90 rushing yards for the game on this drive alone.  Once again, Dylan Hamilton added the PAT and the Bucks lead stood at 14-7.  The combination of excellent ball control and a stingy and ferocious defense allowed the Bucks to control the second half from beginning to end.  Upper Merion only had three offensive possessions and could only muster two first downs in the entire second half.  The entire defensive unit should be commended for their tremendous effort.  West hopes to keep to their winning ways as they travel to Wissahickon on Friday night to face the Trojans.  WEST IS BEST!  GO BUCKS!!

The Bucks hosted the Plymouth-Whitemarsh Colonials last Friday evening in their second home conference showdown of the season.  The contest was played in a steady, driving rain which eventually turned the turf at War Memorial Field into something resembling Everglades National Park.  The only things missing were some alligators and the occasional swamp buggy.  Central Bucks West immediately jumped on the board on their first possession with an exhilarating Wes O’Kula 69 yard touchdown run through the muck.  Unfortunately, West was unable to covert the PAT and held an early 6-0 lead.  Plymouth-Whitemarsh track star and speedster running back Da’Rel Scott took advantage of the adverse conditions by gaining large chunks of yards and registering touchdown runs of 25 and 15 yards in the first half.  The Colonials were able to convert both PAT’s and it appeared that they would enter the locker room with a 14-6 lead.  However, the Bucks had other thoughts.  With just a few minutes remaining in the first half, West embarked on a very efficient drive that would yield them another touchdown.  The highlight of the drive was a 50 yard pass play from Wes O’Kula to Andy Russell, which set up a  2 yard touchdown run by Dave Mastrangelo.  West was unsuccessful at converting the 2 point conversion and the halftime score stood at 14-12. Unfortunately, the momentum from the touchdown late in the first half did not carry over into the second half as the Colonials were able to score on all five of their second half possessions.  Plymouth-Whitemarsh’s second half offensive attack was again led by Da’Rel Scott, who added two more touchdowns to his tally.  The Colonials left War Memorial Field with a 48-12 victory.  Strong performers for the Bucks included Andy Russell who racked up 100 yards on the ground, 46 yards receiving and a touchdown and Wes O’Kula’s 42 yards through the air and 74 yards rushing.  In addition, Dave Mastrangelo closed the gap late in the first half with his score.  On the defensive side of the ball, Matt Weise recorded an interception and the Bucks were able to block a Colonial PAT late in the game.  The entire Bucks squad battled hard throughout the game.  The rain may have dampened the playing surface, but not the Bucks’ resolve.

West will travel to Upper Merion next Friday evening looking to get back into the win column.  GO BUCKS!

On Friday evening, the Bucks traveled to Upper Dublin looking to maintain an unblemished conference record.  However, the much improved Flying Cardinals, 1-0 in conference play going into the game, had other thoughts.  On the Bucks first possession, they were able to establish themselves offensively with a nine play, 56-yard drive.  Unfortunately, the drive was halted by an untimely fumble which was recovered by the Cardinals at their own 8-yard line.  Both defenses played well and the first quarter ended scoreless. Early in the second quarter, the Bucks drew first blood on a Dylan Hamilton 26-yard field goal.  Upper Dublin countered on a 2-yard scamper by Jonathan Hamill and the Cardinals took a 7-3 lead.  The West offense kept Upper Dublin off stride with an affective mix of a ground and air game.  The Bucks responded with a nifty 9-yard touchdown pass to junior Andy Russell from junior Wes O’Kula.  West did not convert the PAT and the Bucks held a 9-7 advantage.  As the first half was drawing to a close, the Cardinals scored on a well executed flea-flicker from McFarland to Fusco.  The PAT was no good and the Cards held a 13-9 advantage at the half.  Brandon King was a key factor in the first half as he netted 60-yards on 8 carries.  Unfortunately, his night was cut short due to a leg injury.  The Bucks took control early in the second half, as they marched on an 11 play, 71-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard sneak by Wes O’Kula.  Hamilton added the extra point and the Bucks assumed a 16-13 advantage.  On Upper Dublin’s next possession, the Cardinals responded with a touchdown of their own on a 21-yard pass from McFarland to Tewksbury.  They added the extra point and the score stood at 20-16.  Upper Dublin reached the end zone again in the fourth quarter and the game ended with a 27-16 Cardinal victory.  Statistically, the numbers for both teams were almost identical. Central Bucks West garnered 16 first downs to 13 for Upper Dublin.  Total yardage yielded 302 for Upper Dublin versus 301 for West.  The Bucks ground attack was well balanced as Andy Russell punched out 71 yards on 12 carries and Casey Quedenfeld notched 50 yards on 8 carries.  The Bucks will look to rebound as they host Plymouth-Whitemarsh Friday night at War Memorial Field.

The Bucks of C.B. West hosted the Cheltenham Panthers on Friday evening in the conference opener for both squads.  The high octane offensive firepower of the Panthers had been very evident in the young season as they looked to spoil the Bucks night.  Their plans never materialized, however, as the highly motivated Bucks had other thoughts.  West kicked off to start the encounter.  On the eighth play of the opening drive, West junior defensive back, Wes O’Kula “under pressure” picked off an errant Cheltenham pass to start a drive on their own 12 yard line.  On the fourth play, West junior Andy Russell took off on a 55 yard jaunt down to the Panther 17 yard line.  Five plays later, dragging Cheltenham defenders, fullback Brandon King crossed the goal line for a four yard touchdown.  This would prove to be the only scoring in the first quarter.  The first of many special teams highlights occurred early in the second quarter as West recovered a fumbled Cheltenham punt return on the Panther’s 37 yard line.  Six plays later, it was Brandon King once again on a nifty outside run from 12 yards out.  West’s two point conversion failed.  It appeared that West would enter the locker room with a 12-0 halftime advantage.  However, an errant snap to the punter enabled Cheltenham to recover at the Bucks’ 5 yard line.  Two plays later, Zack Shands of Cheltenham scored from three yards out with 59 seconds remaining.  The conversion was good as the half ended with West up 12-7.  In the third quarter, Cheltenham took the lead on a 21 yard touchdown pass from Hawkins to Nicolus Oliver.  Once again, the conversion was completed.  On the ensuing drive, West immediately took back the lead on a gutsy fourth down call when quarterback Wes O’Kula hit senior Dave Mastrangelo with a beautiful 25 yard touchdown pass.  Once again, West attempted a two point conversion which failed.  The third quarter ended with no further scoring.  The fourth quarter would prove to showcase the Bucks’ tenacity with some outstanding plays.  After a relatively quiet first eight minutes, the excitement began when Cheltenham’s Antoine Wheatley blazed for a 53 yard sprint, only to be caught from behind on a touchdown-saving tackle by sophomore Matt Fitz at the seven yard line.  After a three yard gain to the four, the Bucks defense was impenetrable, led by Brandon King and Dylan Hamilton.  The next three plays for Cheltenham went nowhere as the Bucks took over at their own five with a little over three minutes remaining.  The Bucks were unable to pick up a first and were forced to punt on fourth down from their own thirteen.  Needing a monster punt, sophomore John DiStefano responded with a booming, spiraling NFL style kick of 57 yards.  Cheltenham’s night ended when Andy Russell picked off a pass to seal the Bucks’ victory.  Congratulations to the players and coaches! The Bucks will be looking to maintain their unblemished conference record when they travel to Upper Dublin on Friday.

On Saturday, September 17th, Central Bucks West met Central Bucks East at C.B South Stadium.  The game was played under threatening skies and under field conditions that more resembled an outfield after a rock concert than a football field.  On the opening drive of the game, the Bucks fumbled, however, C.B. East did the same on their first possession.  Unfortunately, the turnover did not yield any points for West.  East posted their first points of the game on a well-executed reverse by Sean Hall.  The Patriots added two more scores and two successful conversions to build a 21-0 halftime advantage.  The second half was postponed 75 minutes due to sporadic flashes of lightning from the southwest.  East tallied another touchdown in the third quarter and rounded out their scoring for the evening on a reverse play with 46 seconds to play that surprised many in attendance.  Despite the loss, West was able to mount their most formidable and consistent ground attack of the young season, highlighted by Brandon King’s 16 carry, 105 yard effort.  King was the offensive star of the game for the Bucks.  Junior Andy Russell contributed to the ground game with 52 yards on 12 carries.  Next Friday, the Bucks will host Cheltenham in their first conference match-up of the season at 7pm at War Memorial Field.  The Bucks are off to an unanticipated 0-3 start, but everyone associated with program(players, coaches, and fans) is looking forward to much success against their conference opponents this Fall.

After starting the 2005 season with a loss to Quakertown, the Bucks kicked off their home schedule with an encounter with their neighbors from Warrington. The results were eerily similar.  South used a balanced ground attack, coupled with some key passes, to stake out a 21-0 lead at halftime. The Bucks came out of the locker room to score in the third quarter on a nifty swing pass from QB Rob Russell to Brandon King, to cut the lead to 21-7.  However, that would be the extent of West’s scoring for the evening, as South added another score to make the final 28-7
Statistically, the Bucks outperformed South in the second half, notching 8 first downs to South’s 5. Commendable performances in a relief roll for West were QB Gazda (2 for 3, good for 29 yards) and Wideout Liberto, who was on the receiving end of both passes. On the defensive side of the ball, King recorded three tackles for a loss, along with a number of other gritty performances.

On a beautiful, starlit evening, the Bucks kicked off the 2005 campaign against Quakertown at the Panthers’ newly-renovated Alumni Field.  The Bucks, reverting back to their traditional yellow and black and led by first year head coach Chris Felton, were looking to spoil the Panthers’ home opener.  After winning the opening coin toss, the Bucks deferred possession until the second half.  On the third play of Quakertown’s opening drive, West’s Rob Russell (Terrier) intercepted a Jim Bowman pass and West took over at the Quakertown 39 yard line.  Unfortunately, on West’s third down, the Bucks committed their first of eight fumbles, six of which were recovered by Quakertown.  Coupled with an interception, West was plagued by seven turnovers throughout the game.  The first quarter did not result in a score by either team, as both defenses were very stout.  In addition to Rob Russell’s interception, his younger brother Andy added a pick, as well.  The only scoring in the first half came on a one yard plunge by Quakertown’s Dustin Fischer.  The extra point was good and Quakertown entered the locker room with a 7-0 halftime lead.  The Bucks received to start the second half and marched 59 yards on a four play drive, capped by Casey Quedenfeld’s scintillating 44 yard touchdown run.  Dylan (Like A Rolling Stone) Hamilton added the PAT to tie the score at seven.  Quakertown countered with two rushing touchdowns to close out the third quarter.  The Panthers added one more score to post a 28-7 victory over the Bucks.  There were a number of strong performances on both sides of the ball for West.  Among them were the steady play of Rob Russell at quarterback, Casey Quedenfeld at running back (2 carries for 56 yards and a TD).  Quedenfeld also added two receptions to his highlight reel; good for 33 yards.  On the defensive side of the ball, the stingy Bucks defense only allowed 29 total passing yards for the game.  The Bucks defense was on the field for the bulk of the game and the entire unit played aggressively throughout.  Optimism for the 2005 season is extremely high due to the strong commitment from the players and coaching staff.  The Bucks look forward to the ongoing support from the best fan base in the state of  Pennsylvania.
