Important Reminders for Quarterbacks
-
Pre read the defense
before the snap to get a tip-off as to which receivers
will probably be open
or if you have to change the play.
-
Always take the speed
and ability of your receivers into consideration.
-
Don’t make up your mind
who you are going to throw to before the snap.
-
Set up quickly using the
proper steps, dictated by the kind of pass you’re
throwing.
-
“Look off” the defenders
on the patterns that call for it.
-
Always know your primary
and secondary receivers.
-
If everyone is covered
“eat the ball” or throw it away rather than throw an
interception, or
better yet scramble for a big gain.
-
When scrambling, always
look to throw the ball until you have crossed the line
of scrimmage.
-
Throw the right kind of
pass for the occasion. You may have to “rifle it” or
“lay it up” or just
take something off it.
-
Don’t throw the ball too
late! Read the body position of the defender and the
receiver.
-
Always cover a flat pass
after you throw it.
-
Always know the down and
distance and the time remaining.
-
Always take into
consideration the wind and other weather conditions.
-
If you feel a sack
coming on, cover the football to avoid a fumble.
-
If you throw a bad pass
or a receiver drops an easy catch don’t drop your head.
-
Always keep your
composure, especially after being sacked or late hit.
-
Compliment your lineman
when they pass block well. Without good pass blocking a
QB
cannot look good.
-
Before the snap check
for proper alignment by the receivers and backs.
19. If a
receiver loafs, let him know about it. If the receiver
drops a pass, but not because
of a poor effort-don’t
let him get down. If he makes a great effort, compliment
him.
